Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Music Superstar and Cultural Icon, Dies at Eighty-One Years Old
The world mourns the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican reggae singer and actor whose distinctive voice played a key role in popularizing the reggae genre across the globe. He has died at the age of 81.
“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your support was his motivation during his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.
Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic sound and positive temperament earned him a vast and loyal fanbase.
In addition to his musical achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972’s crime drama The Harder They Come, a role that was highly acclaimed and is considered a landmark of Jamaican cinema.
Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of musicians, including Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
