Our team is verifying video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site from which the images originated was based on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
