Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Major Signing for the WSL Side

The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
