The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
